Time management helpes you to organize and plan your time. Good time management helps you to work smarter, not harder and you can do a lot more with less time. Although we all have 24 hours in a day, people often feel that there's not enough time. So how to use the time we have in our favour? The answer is effective time management.
Stephen Covey once said: “The key is not to prioritize what’s on your schedule, but to schedule your priorities.”

Founding a business is a complicated process and an entrepreneur has to share time between founding a business, planning, strategy development, networking and many other business-related activities. In the begginning it's easy to burn out, as the list of obligations grows rapidly. You have to attend in different events, meet new people and make important decicions carefully because the future of the company may depend on it. Proper time management may come in handy.
Tip 1 - One thing at a time
Segment your everyday activities by how much time you are spending for example answerring emails, phonecalls, doing financial management activities, finding necessary papers like invoices, contracts and receipts, keeping in touch with your customers, driving around different places to meet partners or customers. Try to find time for every segment you find important in your entrepreneurs day and when you do, dedicate yourself to it 100%. All of a sudden you realise that you have more time now when you really concentrate on one activity at a time. Many studies have shown that multitasking takes more time than saves it, up to 40% more time to be exact.
You can start your day by taking up to 30 minutes to write a To Do list of everything you want to get done during the day. Select the activities accordingly (ofcourse you can add some of your own):
- Activities that don't take more than 2 minutes. Start with these first.
- Activities that someone else could do. Who? Delegate.
- Most important activities. Set them as a priority.
- Activities that take more time but are important in the long run. Find time in each day to concentrate on these.
I also recommend that you explore an excellent tool such as Trello, which is very user-friendly and completely free of charge for the general user. In addition, it is always possible to use a calendar, nowadays it is maybe easier to use it in digital form, such as Google Calendar where you can mark everything you should do on a particular day (you need a Google Account to use Google Calendar) . It also helps keep track of other team members schedules, making it easier for example to schedule different meetings.
Tip 2 - choose a suitable environment
Everyone needs a suitable environment to get work done. If your desk is piled with post-it notes, different documents and receipts, it can distract you from focusing on your work. But people are different, some of us like to work in complete silence and others can't work without music playing in the backround. Try to find the best way for you to be proactive and brake your rutine once in a while by working outside your usual environment, for example from a coffee shop.
Tip 3 - Optimize yourself.
Think about your usual day. When are you most active? When are you most creative? When are you most sociable? If it's possible try to plan your daily activities accordingly, this way you can plan your day better and be more productive.
It's exciting to be an entrepreneur, you have more freedom over your time, many new meetings, projects and people, but don't forget to take some time off. Take at least one day in a week when you don't work and don't even think about it.
